A Muslim-Friendly Guide to Kawaii Culture Hub - Harajuku in Tokyo, Japan

Assalamu Alaikum!

I am Yuta from Japan Muslim Tour.

We offer halal Japanese cuisine experiences and private tour services in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.🇯🇵

Today, we will introduce a model course of the Harajuku area, also known as the birthplace of Kawaii culture in Japan, with Muslim-friendly information included.

Hope you will enjoy it. :)

About Harajuku

Harajuku is a popular area in central Tokyo, located between Shibuya and Shinjuku on the JR Yamanote line. Many people visit Harajuku Station to see famous places like Yoyogi Park, Meiji Shrine, and the stylish shopping street, Omotesando.

Harajuku used to be a post town, but today it's famous worldwide as the birthplace of kawaii (cute) culture. The area also has Tokyo’s oldest wooden station building. In June 2020, new shops and restaurants opened around Harajuku Station, making it an even more popular spot for food, fashion, and culture in Tokyo.

Let’s go exploring! 🙌

Meiji Shrine

Staying time: 45 min

Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū) is a sacred site dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. Conveniently located near the busy Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line, the shrine, along with Yoyogi Park, creates a peaceful, forested oasis in the middle of the city. It’s a great place to enjoy a quiet walk away from the hustle and bustle.

Takeshita Street

Staying time: 60 min

The heart of Harajuku's teenage culture is Takeshita Street and its surrounding side streets. These areas are packed with trendy shops, fashion boutiques, used clothing stores, crepe stands, and fast food outlets, all catering to fashion-forward and trend-conscious teens.

Shopping in Takeshita Street:

  1. DAISO

Daiso is one of Japan’s famous 100-yen shop brands, offering a huge variety of unique and quirky products. Almost everything is priced at just 100 yen (less than a dollar!), with a few exceptions. Daiso Japan has an impressive selection of around 70,000 different items, providing everything you need to brighten up your daily life.

2. Rainbow cotton candy

If you're searching for a gigantic rainbow cotton candy that's bigger than your head, look no further than Totti Candy Factory!

3. PURIKURA LAND NOA

If you're curious about what it's like to be a Japanese teenage girl, visit a Purikura (Print Club) shop! This place is often called the “Mecca of Purikura” because its popularity has remained unchanged for several decades.

Lunch at Mr.HALAL

If you ever get hungry in Harajuku, Mr. HALAL is the place to be!

Offering a taste of New York in the heart of Tokyo, their halal-certified Chicken over Rice is a perfect blend of tasty, healthy, and spicy. Every bite will leave you craving more, making it a must-visit spot for flavorful and satisfying meals.
